The brother of a Bluffton man shot to death on Christmas Eve is speaking out about the release of the tow truck operator who is charged in Carlos Olivera's death.  Preston Oates, who admitted to killing him, was released on bond Wednesday from the Beaufort County Detention Center.  Preston Oates is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Carlos Olivera.  He also faces a weapons charge and one for trying to escape the Beaufort County Detention Center.  He claims he fired in self defense after Olivera waved a gun at him.  This was all over a parking dispute.  Olivera did have a gun -- but never fired it.  Olivera was shot six times -- four of those were in the back.

The Bluffton tow truck driver charged in the shooting death of an Edgefield neighbor on Christmas Eve was back in court Thursday. Judge Thomas Cooper set bond at $200,000 for all his charges, pending he pass a competency evaluation next Month.  He faces a manslaughter, weapons and attempted escape charge for the shooting death of Carlos Olivera.  Preston Oates says he shot Olivera out of self-defense during a dispute over a parking violation.  Oates was attempting to tow Olivera's car, and a fight broke out.  After a short time in jail- authorities say Oates tried to escape.
 A suspect in a fatal shooting who tried to escape from the Beaufort County jail is getting two months in solitary confinement.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports 27-year-old Preston Oates will be housed alone in his cell and get only an hour a day for recreation.

Oates was a tow truck driver who is charged in the shooting death of 34-year-old Carlos Olivera of Bluffton during an argument last Christmas Eve. The dispute took place after Oates put a wheel boot on Olivera's minivan.

A Bluffton man who attempted to escape from the Beaufort County Dentention Center last week was given 60 days in maximum security at a disciplinary hearing Tuesday.

Preston Oates was charged with attempted escape and malicious injury to property last week after the jail director says he damaged his cell window.  Oates is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Carlos Olivera on Christmas Eve.
Oates was attempting to tow Olivera's car and an argument ensued.

Olivera was armed but never fired his gun.  Oates claims he fired in self-defense.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies say a man charged in a shooting death on Christmas Eve has tried to escape from jail

The Beaufort Gazette reported that police say 27-year-old Preston Oates tried to break out of his cell Sunday.

Police Chief Matt Clancy says Oates has been charged with malicious injury to property and attempted escape. Police say Oates damaged the window of his cell.

Oates was in jail on charges of manslaughter and a weapon violation in the shooting death of 34-year-old Carlos Olivera of Bluffton during an argument on Christmas Eve.

Police say Oates was a tow truck driver who had placed an immobilizing wheel boot on Olivera's minivan.

The men were both armed and Olivera was shot.  Clancy says the damage to the cell was about $2,000.

The Bluffton tow truck operator charged in a fatal Christmas eve shooting  faces new charges after officials say he damaged his jail cell window Monday at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Preston Oates, 27, has been charged with Attempted Escape and Malicious Injury to Property, Beaufort County Detention Director Phil Foot said.  Foot was reluctant to release many details about the incident, citing security reasons, but credits the quick attention of his security officers in noticing Oates' work. 

No bond hearing has been set yet. 

A Beaufort County grand jury indicted Oates last month on a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Carlos Olivera.  He was also indicted on a charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.  According to reports, Oates fired at Olivera half a dozen times after a dispute over a parking violation in the Edgefield neighborhood. Oates claims he acted in self defense that night.
